Barrow is a port town with a strong seafaring history and the Dock Museum is one of the big local attractions. Further afield, don’t miss the 900 year old former monastry of Furness Abbey or park at Roa car park and catch a ferry across Morecombe Bay to the tiny historic Piel Island, a site of special scientific interest which also has its own castle and pub.

One of the most breathtaking drives from Barrow is along the A590 along the north shore of Morecombe, inland to Ulverston  and around Lake Windermere to Ambleside. From Ambleside, travel north stopping off at Grasmere and then on to Keswick before rejoining the coast at Cockermouth and returning to Barrow. This trip of around 4hrs and 127miles will take you right across the lakes and can easily be done in a day with the chance to stop off in some of the region’s most beautiful and famous locations along the way.

Parking is plentiful in Barrow-in-Furness with a number of car parks in the town run by Westmorland and Furness Council with fees payable by mobile phone.

Vehicles can be returned outside of normal working hours. Renters should park their vehicle in the return zone, lock and secure the vehicle and drop the keys in the Avis drop box, which is situated within the fencing.

Please note that the renter is liable for any damage to the vehicle until the office re-opens.
