Get the Most Out of Your Vacation in New York City

Tom Wolfe said it best: “One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.”

Whether you’re visiting New York City for a weekend getaway or a full week, you’re bound to be transfixed by the people, the skyscrapers, and the world-famous experiences you can’t find anywhere else. We couldn’t possibly list every notorious building, historical monument, and award-winning bagel stand that this enchanting city has to offer, but we can get you started with a few activities that you don’t want to miss. We hope this list of activities, rental car accommodations, and amazing things to do in New York City help get you going.

Day Trips From New York City

Central Park

What’s the big deal about Central Park? It’s just a park, right? Wrong! You can do a whole lot more than have a picnic or toss a frisbee on this 843-acre patch of green that is totally surrounded by the city. Take your children to one of 20 playgrounds, stroll through the Conservatory Garden, or enjoy a private horse and carriage ride. Central Park offers a real-life experience that is definitely worth it.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

If you aren’t an art aficionado yet, you will be after a day trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This world-renowned spread of first-class art from across the globe will keep you captivated for the better part of a day. At the museum you will find yourself marveling at a number of wondrous exhibits that display pieces from around the world including Italy, Rome, and Egypt.

Seasonal Activities

New York City is an intriguing and exciting place no matter what time of year you visit, but it helps to plan your activities according to the weather.

Coney Island

Summer in New York definitely requires a trip to Coney Island and is always the portrait of family fun. Try your stomach at a hot-dog-eating contest on the Fourth of July, wander through the Coney Island Museum, catch a magic show, attend a number of fun festivals, or visit one of the many Coney Island theme parks to enjoy amusement park rides and games.

Even though Coney Island is open year-round, the best time to go is during the spring or summer when every ride, booth, and event is open and in full swing.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center

You might be familiar with The Rink at Rockefeller Center due to its many appearances in popular movies and television shows. If you’re visiting New York City in the wintertime, then ice skating at The Rink is an absolute must. Take your family for a classic skate around the rink, or book a reservation for one of the rink’s many seasonal and holiday events, like the famous Easter Brunch & Skating event.
